Background. The object of the study is technical solutions provided in the form of patents. The subject of the study is generalized methods of performance improvement of these solutions. The purpose of the study is to develop a technique of automatic determination of generalized methods.
Materials and methods. The study was carried out using methods of system analysis and energy-information, as well as the database theory. 
Results. The authors have developed the comprehensive technique of automatic generalized methods determination. It has two versions of application: the fast and the complete, each of which use different metrics and proximity measures. The developed technique is implemented in the "Patent Search" subsystem of the "Intellect" system.
Conclusions. The results of the trial operation of the generalized methods determination module in the "Patent Search" subsystem have led to a conclusion about the effectiveness of the developed technique and the feasibility of further research.
